What’s The Difference Between Annulment & Divorce?

What’s the difference between an Annulment and a Divorce?  Both unfortunate outcomes are the two ways to end your marriage legally.  However, they are not the same process! An annulment is a legal procedure which cancels a marriage and it declares that the marriage never technically existed and was never valid.  While a divorce, is the ending of a valid marriage.  Every state has different laws for annulment, in most cases it applies for marriages that weren’t even legal in the first place such as underage or one of the parties was already married.

Many people have a misconception that annulment applies when a marriage was short, and that they don’t need to go through the formal divorce process. This is simply not true.
